About
Timber Frame Construction
1
What is Timber Framing?
Timber Frame Construction is a centuries-old method of building that uses heavy timbers and careful joints to create a building in which the load-bearing timber is left exposed. The construction method has been historically used in many parts of the world and is known for its use of mortise and tenon joints and detailed trusses. Both contribute to the iconic look and strength of timber frame buildings.

What Makes Timber Framing Special?
Timber Frame Construction is time-tested and approved. The oldest surviving timber frame building in the United States was built in 1641 and still stands strong in Dedham, Massachusetts. In addition to Timber Framing’s unmatched strength, the construction method is more energy-efficient and eco-friendly compared to buildings built via other construction methods.
Of course, nothing beats the aesthetic of a traditional timber frame building. Vaulted spaces, exposed timbers, detailed trusses, and flawlessly defined joints create an elegant, rustic structure like no other.

Why Mortise and Tenon?
A mortise is a slot cut into a timber, while a tenon is a corresponding tab that fits precisely into the slot. Together, they create a mortise and tenon joint—renowned for its strength and durability. This time-tested technique has been used for centuries in everything from intricate stonework to simple furniture and, of course, iconic timber framing. At Pequea, we’ve perfected mortise and tenon joinery, ensuring our structures are not only incredibly strong and versatile but also visually stunning.

What is CNC Processing?
CNC processing, or Computer Numerical Control processing, is a manufacturing method that uses computer-controlled machines to cut timbers with extreme precision. This technology allows us to create timber frame pieces that fit together perfectly, ensuring long-lasting strength and stability for your structure. By using CNC processing, we assure consistent quality across all our timber frame sheds, pavilions, and barns, resulting in a smooth, polished finish that enhances durability and appearance.
