Pergolas have many purposes! Primarily, pergolas are used to provide shade to outdoor living spaces. Furniture, outdoor grills, and more benefit from protection by a pergola. Pergolas are also great in gardens for climbing plants and for providing limited shade. Lastly, Pergolas are a great aesthetic addition to any outdoor space and, when cared for properly, can increase the value of your home. 

In most areas, you will need a permit to build a pergola. Some places only require permits for structures greater than 100-250 sq ft or for structures installed directly into the ground, so be sure to check in with your local building department. 

Yes! Pergolas that are attached to a home or other building are very structurally sound. These attachments also usually provide more protection from elements than a freestanding pergola. However, because a pergola attached to a house would modify a residential structure, it’s extra important to follow building regulations for your area to ensure safety and code compliance.  

Yes. Pergolas need a foundation to be properly secured and stable. A pergola should always be attached directly to a concrete pad or to concrete footings.
